RABIES- CAUSE SYMPTOMS AND PREVENTION

The bite of a rabid dog (mad dog) and some other rabid mammals such has monkeys, cats, or rabbits may cause rabies, which is fatal viral disease caused by a rabies virus or Lyssa virus which is present in the saliva of the infected animals. This article discusses the transmission, treatment and diagnosis of rabies and explains which animals are most likely to have rabies.
The viruses are injected in to human blood by the bite of the rabid animal. Disease is not expressed after infection even up to 1 to 3 months. The long period of incubation makes it possible for a rabies vaccination, after a bite, to develop immunity and prevent the appearance of disease.

Symptoms of Rabies

when a person is infected with the rabies virus, the virus multiplies within the body until symptoms develop. Rabies is characterized by severe headache, high fever, painful contraction of muscles of throat and chest (due to which there is difficulty in swallowing ). When the rabies virus reaches the brain, the multiplies quickly and rabies symptoms begin. As the disease progresses, neurological symptoms appear and may include :-

• Insomnia
• Anxiety
• Confusion
• Agitation
• Difficulty Swallowing
• Hydrophobia

The Patient feel restless, does excessive salivation, has a chocking feeling and finds difficulty in taking in even liquid food. Since paitent develops fear ofwater, the disease is also called hydrophobia.

How to Prevent Rabies

It is a preventable disease. Some suggestions for how to prevent rabies include keeping your pets under direct supervision. If you are traveling to a developing country in Africa, Asia, Latin America, it’s particular important to know how to prevent rabies:- the diseases kills tens of thousands of
people each year in such countries.

• Cleaning the wound with carbolic soap and clear water immediately after the dog bite is an important preventive measure. Any antiseptic medicine (e.g. Savalon, Dettol) should be applied
• to the wound caused by the dog bite. A doctor should be immeditley consulted for application of anti –rabies vaccine to the patient
• Compulsory Immunization of stray dogs and cats should be done. Pets dog should be vaccinated with anti-rabies vaccine
• A rabid animal shows excessive salutation and tries to seek isolation after bite. Such mad animals should be killed
